Jazz - a truely american form of expression. Combining polyrhythms, improvasation, "blue" notes of Africa, musical form and harmony from western Europe, it is to music what America is to culture...a melting pot. Jazz can mean many different things but for me is it all about the expression of the moment. It is an intimate conversation between the musician, other performers, the audience, the room, the cosmos all in real time through the wonderous language of music. Improvisation is the fuel that powers the exchange of ideas held together by the vehicle of the song. It can be self indulgent at times but that is what the game is about.
My entire musical live has been in some matter to do with jazz. As a young adult, I was a rebellious personality, and as such, could not listen to the status quo radio drivel. Then, my first exposure to "jazz" came to me via Chick Corea's "Mad Hatter"...I was instantly enthralled with the intricacies of this alien music. Since then, through my high school days into college, Jazz has always been my partner in crime.
Eventually, I developed my own voice. My influences have been many; Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock, Keith Jarrett, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, Pat Metheny, John McLaughlin, too many to list.
Here on this page you will find the continuing adventure of my jazz.
Continuing to perform with the Jazz/Funk/R&B group Urban Cadence in Minneapolis.
